Rural physician recruitment across Canada and the United States
DocFinder is the physician recruitment service of Avery Professional Group, founded in 2008 in Bowmanville, Ontario. Rural and remote family medicine, emergency and specialist roles are a large part of what we do, in every Canadian province and territory and across the United States. This page explains how we work with the people and programs a rural community already has, what a community needs ready before a search starts, how incentive programs affect the offer, and what happens after the physician arrives. Ontario is where we have the most depth, so it gets its own section below.
Rural Canada and the rural United States
In Canada we recruit for rural and Northern hospitals, community health centres and family health teams in every province and territory. Each province runs its own incentive and return-of-service programs and its own college registration routes, and we build the ones your community qualifies for into the offer.
In the United States we recruit for critical access hospitals, rural health clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers and rural health systems, especially in the Eastern US. Where a candidate is internationally trained, we work through the state licensure route and, where it applies, J-1 visa waiver and loan-repayment programs that support rural service. We also recruit nurse practitioners, physician assistants and CRNAs for the rural clients we serve.
Candidates come from Canada, the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and we recruit physicians across the Canada–US border in both directions. Recruiting across the Canada–US border
We work with your community recruiter, not around them
Most rural communities already have a physician recruiter, a recruitment committee, or a municipal or hospital staff member who carries the file alongside other work. They know the community, the practice, the hospital and the incentives. What they usually don’t have is time, a candidate pool outside the region, or a structured way to assess and close.
That is where we fit. We take on the sourcing, screening, assessment and offer support, and the recruiter keeps the local relationships, the community visit and the welcome. We share candidates and notes openly, we don’t compete with the community’s own listings, and we’re comfortable being one part of a larger recruitment effort.
Ontario, where we go deepest
How we fit with Practice Ontario, HFOJobs and OPRA
Practice Ontario is the province’s free physician recruitment service, run by Ontario Health, and HFOJobs is its job board. Every eligible vacancy should be posted there, and we’ll help you write the posting so it reads well to a physician who has never heard of your community. We recruit alongside it; Practice Ontario advisors also refer physicians, including residents and internationally trained physicians, and we work with those referrals rather than duplicating them.
OPRA, the Ontario Physician Recruitment Alliance, is the network of community recruiters across the province. If your recruiter is a member, we respect OPRA’s conventions on candidate ownership and community visits, and we don’t approach a physician a member community is already in active conversation with.
Ontario Health and the Ministry of Health manage the programs below and the health human resources planning that affects your Rurality Index for Ontario (RIO) score and eligibility. We keep track of which programs your community qualifies for and build them into the offer.
Ontario incentives and how they affect the offer
Northern and Rural Recruitment and Retention Initiative (NRRRI). A recruitment grant from the Ministry of Health’s Northern Health Programs for physicians who set up full-time practice in eligible communities, paid out over four years with a return-of-service commitment. Eligibility depends on the community’s RIO score and on the physician (CPSO registration, full-time practice, hospital privileges, ER coverage where required, and Canadian citizenship or permanent residency). Approval has to be in place before the physician starts practice, so we build the application timing into the offer.
NRRRI details at ontario.caPractice Ready Ontario (PRO). The province’s practice-ready assessment route for internationally trained family physicians. After eligibility screening, an exam and interview, candidates complete a 12-week supervised clinical field assessment in a rural or Northern community and then take on a three-year return of service in a community of need. Communities can act as assessment sites. If your community is eligible, PRO widens the pool considerably, and we recruit into it.
Practice Ready Ontario at Ontario HealthOther supports. Northern Physician Retention Initiative, the Rural and Northern Physician Group Agreement, locum programs used to bridge a vacancy, and municipal incentives. We’ll tell you which apply to your community and make sure the offer letter reflects them accurately. We don’t quote program amounts on this page because they change; the links above are current.
What a community needs ready before a search starts
A rural search closes on the details a physician’s family will ask about, not just the medicine. Before we begin we work through these with you:
The practice offer: practice model (FHO, FHT, RNPGA, hospital-employed, or salaried alternative payment plan), overhead arrangement, roster size and expectations, start-up support, and whether the physician is joining an existing group.
Call: emergency department coverage and inpatient call, how often, how it is paid, and what the backup looks like.
Housing: what is available to rent or buy, and whether the hospital or municipality can help with a first year.
Spouse or partner employment and children’s schooling: these decide more moves than income does.
Hospital privileges and credentialing timelines, and who owns them.
The community visit: who hosts it, what is shown, and who follows up.
Where the physicians come from
Ontario residents finishing training, physicians elsewhere in Canada looking for a rural practice, Canadian physicians in the US who want to come home, and physicians from the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. For international candidates we work through CPSO registration and, where it fits, Practice Ready Ontario, and we guide the family through the move with our global relocation partners.
After the physician starts
Most rural placements are lost in the first year, not in the search. We stay in touch with the physician and with you after the start date, flag problems early (call burden, roster growth, spousal employment, isolation), and help work them through. Every physician placement carries a 12-month replacement guarantee.
Fees
Fees depend on the role and the type of search. Rural family medicine searches are often run on a contingency basis, so you pay only when the physician is placed; retained searches suit multi-physician or hard-to-fill roles. We’ll send a written proposal once we understand the vacancy.
Frequently asked questions
We already have a community recruiter. Why would we hire a firm?+
To add capacity and reach, not to replace them. Your recruiter keeps the local relationships and the community visit; we take on sourcing outside your region, screening, assessment and offer support, and we share everything openly.
Do you post on HFOJobs and work with Practice Ontario?+
Yes. We help you write the HFOJobs posting and we work alongside Practice Ontario advisors and their referrals rather than duplicating them.
Can you help us understand NRRRI or Practice Ready Ontario eligibility?+
Yes. We’ll tell you which programs your community and candidate qualify for, and we build the application timing into the offer. We link to the official ontario.ca and Ontario Health pages rather than quoting amounts, because they change.
Do you recruit internationally trained physicians for rural Ontario?+
Yes, from the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand in particular, through CPSO registration routes and, where eligible, Practice Ready Ontario.
What happens after the physician starts?+
We stay in touch with the physician and with you, flag problems early, and every physician placement carries a 12-month replacement guarantee.
What does it cost?+
Fees depend on the role and on whether the search is retained or contingency. We’ll send a written proposal for your vacancy.
Do you recruit for critical access hospitals and rural clinics in the US?+
Yes. We recruit for critical access hospitals, rural health clinics, FQHCs and rural health systems across the United States, especially the Eastern US, as well as for rural and Northern communities across Canada.
