Located
just over an hour northeast of Toronto in the
Kawarthas lake region of Ontario, the Greater Peterborough Area is
comprised of the municipalities of the City of
Peterborough and several townships and villages within the
County of Peterborough.
Although
the City of Peterborough with a population of approximately
76,200 provides a centre for many major services, the
catchment area of approximately 220,000 in total is served
by the Peterborough area medical community.
Complimenting the area are the many township areas within
the County of Peterborough where agriculture, tourism and
selected industries enhance the fabric of the whole area.
This diversity within such close proximity provides a wide
variety of options in which to work, live and play.
In
the height of the tourism season the population expands
and becomes very dynamic and even more active.
The Peterborough region offers
its citizens access to the widest array of educational
opportunities as well as a very comprehensive level of
medical services. In the Greater Peterborough Area there
are public and separate elementary and secondary school
systems, private schools, private religious schools, Sir
Sandford Fleming College and Trent University. Few Ontario
communities of this size have such a wide spectrum of
educational opportunities.
As
a "preferred community of choice" Peterborough
prides itself as being a safe and environmentally
conscious community. It is developing and evolving from a
major industrial employment centre to a diversified
skill-based centre for employment opportunities and with a
steady, measured plan for growth, has many of the
amenities of a larger urban centre within a smaller, more
friendly context.
It should also be noted that in our community's broader
area, an abundance of arts, cultural and recreation
opportunities exist. Also, there is a significant number and
variety of restaurants to satisfy the tastes of most people.
As a family oriented community, child care services are very
much a part of the fabric of our social infrastructure and
very accessible.
